I begin every class that I teach with one idea: Failure is an option. Sometimes, we can be so conditioned to fear failure that we will purposely avoid the dangerous, the vulnerable, and the truth; however, aren’t these the places that great art is made? I believe that a string of beautiful failures has helped me to become the artist and the person I am today, and I hope to bring that ability to welcome failure to every rehearsal room and classroom. If we are able to create a space where it is safe to exist, play, create, succeed, make mistakes, explore, share, fail, and try again, then I believe that we will be on our way to making something extraordinary. We need that space and that trust with each other in order to learn more about ourselves and the work. This is why, to me, there is no place more exciting, dangerous, and welcoming than a rehearsal room. It is a wondrous place where failure is an option, everyone is welcome, and anything is possible.
